Diabetes indicates that the level of glucose, or sugar, is very high in the blood. If it is type 1 diabetes, the pancreas will not produce insulin.

Insulin is a hormone that helps glucose enter cells to supply them with energy. If insulin is not produced, there will be excess glucose remaining in the blood. Over time, high blood glucose levels can cause serious problems with your heart, eyes, kidneys, nerves, gums and teeth.

Type 1 diabetes occurs most often in children and young adults, but can occur at any age.

Symptoms may include:

  • Extreme thirst
  • Frequent urination
  • Feeling very hungry or tired
  • Weight loss for no apparent reason

If you have a blood test, it will show if you have diabetes. If so, you will need to take insulin for the rest of your life. A blood test called A1c can check how well you are managing your diabetes.

Uncontrolled elevation in blood glucose and the so-called ketone bodies is especially serious, since, if not maintained under treatment, it will be life-threatening when it reaches the extreme of the so-called ketoacidotic coma.

One way to prevent diabetes is to eliminate sugars and refined carbohydrates from your diet.
